Déjà vu Dreams

I often see my walk in the spirit in general, and my experiences in the supernatural world of dreams specifically, as a wax-on/wax-off training ground. Remember that old movie The Karate Kid? The young hero wants to learn the great kicks and punches from the karate master.

Instead, the master has him painting his fence and waxing his car, and his student becomes frustrated with what appear to be mundane and unrelated activities that are not moving him toward his goal of becoming a championship fighter.

Finally, the old karate master shows him how the movements he has been practicing in the menial household tasks are actually the same moves he needed to master in order to be a karate champion. It looked like he was just waxing a car, but really he was learning how to block a strike. He thought he was just painting a fence, but really he was practicing how to fight.

Practicing Prophetic Dreaming

God often works with us in similar ways, having us go along in our day-to-day lives not always realizing the importance of what He has us doing. We don’t understand that He is preparing and training us through the seemingly “insignificant” things in our lives, like “silly” dreams.

We all know that David had years of private victories, fighting the lion and killing the bear, before he ever had his epic public victory of defeating Goliath. We should not denigrate our small personal victories of understanding “simple” or “inconsequential” messages to us through our visions at night.

We are connecting with the God of the universe while we sleep. He sees dreams as a powerful communicative medium to bring us closer to Him, His way of seeing things, and His heart. We should be grateful for such experiences and appreciate each one, not discounting or despising the day of small beginnings.

I just received an email from a dear reader illustrating this specific principle. After her second time through our dreams book, Chelsey Gowins shared her amazing story in a previous blog: From Skeptical to Skilled Interpreter.

Now she’s on her third read-through and receiving even more revelation! Chelsey has shared several powerful dreams and interpretations with me and graciously allowed me to include the following testimony to encourage others who may be struggling with similar questions. Way to go, Chelsey!

Third Time’s the Charm – by Chelsey Gowins

Thank you for validating my interpretation – that is huge and my religious mind is blown. The most exciting thing about life is that God is ACTUALLY real.

Recently my coworker shared that she is a dreamer, and she didn’t know before that these dreams were God speaking to her, so I told her to get your Hearing God Through Your Dreams book and that I would read it (for the third time) with her. So I wanted to share how your book has helped me… again.

I just read page 74 where you dreamed about Leo gaining weight the night before he stepped on a scale… and my mind was blown again because lately I have been having the most random, seemingly insignificant “prophetic” dreams of things that happen the next day.

For example, I dreamed I had a gross cup of coffee (and didn’t remember the dream upon waking). That day I decided to try mixing some old decaf beans I had with another blend, and it was nasty and I couldn’t drink it – then I remembered the dream, and the taste was the same as it was in the dream. Or one day I had a dream that the tiny tree I planted in my yard last summer, that I thought I killed, had tiny buds on it. I remembered the dream as I walked by it, and looked up close, and sure enough, the tiniest buds. Or this one most recently – the wildest of them all:

I dreamed my pastor’s wife (who is my spiritual mother in the awake world) pulled two little screws out of my back and replaced them with two new little screws. I woke up and was like, “why am I so weird?” ha ha. Then that morning my smoke alarms began chirping, indicating a dead battery. I started replacing them and discovered the one that needed new batteries was actually my carbon monoxide detector, which is mounted to the ceiling by two small screws – that hook into the backside of it. I remembered that last time I had to replace the battery I literally couldn’t get it mounted back on the screws until I asked Holy Spirit for help, and He was very nurturing in His explanation (which I assumed I made up, of course).

So – I didn’t know why these seemingly unimportant dreams kept happening, and I am still not completely sure, but to read that it happens to you too was incredibly validating. Your book just continues to unlock new keys for me each time I read it, and I feel like so much I thought I knew about God and His nature was wrong, and He’s patiently leading me into the truth.

My Response

Yay God! This is so awesome. Every time you have a dream and then see it play out in waking life, it will encourage your heart. You will realize God is gently working to get your attention and it will make you feel increasingly sure that your dreams are valid. You will become more confident that what you perceive in the spiritual realm is actually manifesting and becoming a reality in the physical world as well.

You will definitely feel even more excited and affirmed when you get to page 120 in the book too! The stories there help explain why you might be having these types of dreams… as practice… to build your history with God and trust in Him speaking to you through this medium.

Then, when other “bigger” lessons or directions come, you’ll be ready to act on the message of your dreams because you’ve had so much practice hearing Him this way already.
